Introduction
To 3D Game Design |
|
| |
if
you are new to 3D game design the first thing you need to know is
that you are about to start on a journey limited only by your own
imagination. The second thing you need to know is that your success
will depend on the tools and training you choose. One
of the essentials is the game engine which provides;
- The
Editor to construct your 3D game world (models and sounds
will be imported into this from other programs)
- The
Renderer to display your game world on the players screen
- The
Physics engine simulating real world gravity, collisions etc.
- The
Exporter to create the file set you will give or sell to other
people

To
buy one of the leading commercial game engines for your own game
will cost you around £175,000.00 (eg Unreal 2 or 3).
However there are a number of emerging 'Indie' game engine companies
that charge a whole lot less. You must remember that this software
uses cutting edge technology and the developers need to charge something
for their game engines, so please do support them!
Most of them provide free starter kits to try out and a full version
should cost you less than £130.00. Make sure that the full
version allows you to distribute your own games royalty free.

3D
Modelling Software |
|
|
You
can find a lot of inexpensive ready made 3D models on the
internet and some are free. So you might be able to create
a game without needing to create your own models. At some
point though you will want to create your own characters,
buildings and creatures (game assets) and you will
need a 3D Editor.

Animation
Software |
|
|
3D
Modelling software often includes support for animation. A
professional 3D modelling and animation package such as 3D
Studio Max might cost you around £2500.00 but there
are some great low cost alternatives, some for as little as
£15.00.
